SAM.gov

Also called: SAM, System for Award Management, sam gov, SAM registration

SAM.gov is the federal government's System for Award Management, where entities register to be eligible for federal contracts, and where contract opportunities, award data, wage determinations and exclusions are published.

Registration is required by FAR 4.1102 before award of most federal contracts, and FAR 4.1201 requires the registration to be renewed every year. Registration is free; the only paid help is optional, and the SAM.gov help desk is the Federal Service Desk (fsd.gov). Registering produces a Unique Entity ID and, for most entities, a CAGE code.

What to check: that your legal business name and address match your IRS and state records exactly (mismatches are the most common cause of a stuck validation), that your NAICS codes and size representations are current, and that the registration shows Active before you submit a bid. Save searches in Contract Opportunities by NAICS, set-aside and notice type.

What it is not: a bid portal for state or local work, and not a marketing channel. Registering does not generate leads; it makes you eligible.
