How do I bid on Forest Service contracts for trail work, brush clearing and fuel reduction?

I'm trying to figure out how to bid on federal land clearing and trail maintenance contracts. My small crew does land clearing in the mountains and we have a chipper and a skid steer. I’ve seen a few Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management notices for hazardous fuel reduction and trail work on SAM.gov. I search by NAICS code 115112 (Soil Preparation, Planting, and Cultivating) and 238910 (Site Preparation Contractors). What confuses me is that some of these are listed as set-aside for different small business types, but it's hard to tell which ones. Also, some notices are just for acreage, and others break it down by unit. How do I know which ones require a bid bond or performance and payment bonds? How do other small companies in this trade get their first award?

You will find Forest Service contracts on SAM.gov, and you will need to understand the solicitation type, the NAICS code, and bonding requirements to submit a responsive bid.
