I started registering my small business in SAM.gov last week and within a day or two, I started getting bombarded with calls and emails from various companies offering to 'help' me complete my registration for a fee. Some even claim to be official SAM.gov partners or something similar. This is for federal contracting, specifically for a cleaning services NAICS code. I'm trying to figure out if SAM.gov registration is actually free, or if I need to pay one of these services. What is the SAM.gov help desk for, and is there ever a reason to pay for help with SAM.gov?
Is SAM.gov registration free, or do I need to pay one of the services that keep emailing me?
Ask a question- SAM.gov registration is free, and you do not need to pay any third-party services to complete it.
- The SAM.gov help desk is available to assist users with technical issues or questions regarding the registration process.
- There is never a reason to pay for help with SAM.gov if you are willing to navigate the system yourself.

Many of these companies are preying on new businesses. While they may offer to complete the registration for you, they are charging for a service you can do yourself at no cost. The Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR) 4.1102(a) states that an offeror is required to be registered in SAM when submitting an offer or quotation and at the time of award, but it does not mandate paying for assistance. Your SAM.gov entity registration must be renewed every 365 days to stay active, and this renewal is also free. For state and local government contracting, you will need to register in their specific vendor portals, which also typically offer free registration and support resources.
SAM.gov registration and renewal are free. Contracting officers check SAM.gov for active registration when an offer is submitted and at the time of award. The Unique Entity Identifier (UEI) is assigned by SAM.gov during registration, and a UEI can be obtained without completing a full registration. Grace is correct that many companies try to capitalize on new businesses by charging for this free service.
