Hey everyone,

I'm just starting to look into federal contracts for my landscaping business (NAICS 561730) here in Jacksonville. I've been seeing mentions of a Unique Entity Identifier (UEI) everywhere, and I know I need one to bid. I registered my company in SAM.gov back in March, but I'm trying to figure out if I can get a UEI without completing the full SAM registration. The SAM.gov site makes it sound like I can get a UEI by itself. Is that right? What's the process for just getting a UEI if I'm not ready for a full registration yet?

Yes, you can obtain a Unique Entity Identifier (UEI) from SAM.gov without completing a full entity registration. The UEI is a 12-character alphanumeric value assigned by SAM.gov.

To get a UEI by itself, you visit SAM.gov and select the option to "Get a Unique Entity ID." This process allows you to generate a UEI for your business without going through all the steps required for a complete SAM.gov entity registration.

While you can get a UEI without full registration, an offeror is required to be registered in SAM.gov when submitting an offer or quotation and at the time of award (FAR 4.1102(a); FAR 52.204-7(b)(1)). This means that to actively pursue federal contracts, a full registration will eventually be necessary. For state and local contracts, the requirements for vendor identification and registration vary by state and local jurisdiction, and you would need to consult their specific procurement portals and vendor guides.
