Hey everyone,

I'm new to federal contracting and just trying to get my SAM.gov registration sorted out for my landscaping company. I went to SAM.gov to register, and it asked me to get a Unique Entity Identifier (UEI). I got that, but then I started looking at some of the older threads here and saw people talking about CAGE codes. I thought the UEI was the main identifier. Is there a difference between a UEI and a CAGE code? Do I need both for federal contracts, and if so, which one should I have gotten first?

The Unique Entity Identifier (UEI) is a 12-character alphanumeric value assigned by SAM.gov that identifies your business, while a CAGE code is a five-character code assigned by the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) that identifies a specific business location. You need both for federal contracts, and you typically get the UEI first because it is assigned when you begin your SAM.gov registration. The CAGE code is assigned automatically during the SAM.gov registration process after you have your UEI.

Your UEI is generated by SAM.gov, and you can obtain it without completing a full registration. However, to submit an offer or quotation for a federal contract and to receive an award, you are required to be fully registered in SAM.gov. The CAGE code is then assigned by the DLA as part of that complete SAM.gov registration. For state and local contracts, the requirements vary by jurisdiction; each state or local government has its own vendor registration portal and rules.
