Hey everyone, I've been trying to get set up for state and local bids this year, mostly for routine grounds maintenance. My company is based in Jacksonville, FL, but I've been checking out opportunities in Georgia, Alabama, and South Carolina too. Each state has its own vendor portal, and getting registered has been a bit of a maze. The commodity codes are different in every one, and the renewal processes vary a lot. I just finished registering in the Team Georgia Marketplace, which was different from Florida's portal.

Would it be helpful to have a pinned thread for each state's procurement portal? We could list the registration steps, any weird commodity code systems, and the renewal rules. Members who use the portal could keep it updated. Would the moderators support something like this, and how would we go about contributing to it?

A pinned thread for each state's procurement portal would be a good resource for members, as state and local procurement processes vary significantly from federal contracting. Federal acquisitions follow the Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR), but state and local governments each have their own procurement codes and portal-specific vendor guides. Your experience with Team Georgia Marketplace being different from Florida's portal is common. Each state portal will have its own registration steps, commodity code systems, and renewal requirements. For example, some states might use NIGP codes, while others have proprietary systems, and renewal cycles can range from annual to every few years. Contributing to such threads would involve members sharing their direct experience with specific state portals, detailing the steps they took, any unique aspects of the commodity code selection, and how renewals are managed. This would be a community-driven effort to compile practical advice for navigating diverse state procurement landscapes.

Jordan, a pinned thread for each state portal would be helpful because state procurement portals often require a specific method for classifying your goods or services, and this can vary from federal NAICS codes or PSC codes. For example, Team Georgia Marketplace uses a UNSPSC code system, which is different from the commodity codes you might see in other states or on SAM.gov. Understanding these differences before you start the registration process can save time. The renewal process is also critical; my firm has found that some states send reminders, while others do not, requiring proactive tracking to maintain an active vendor status.
