Solicitation number
Also called: notice ID, solicitation ID, RFP number, bid number
A solicitation number is the identifier an agency assigns to a specific solicitation, used to find the notice, reference it in questions and proposals, and track its amendments.
On SAM.gov the solicitation number is separate from the notice ID: one solicitation can have several notices (presolicitation, solicitation, amendments, award) that share the solicitation number. Federal numbers often encode the agency and fiscal year, and DLA solicitation numbers on DIBBS follow their own pattern. State and local portals use bid numbers or event numbers that serve the same purpose.
What to check: that the number on your proposal cover, your questions and your email subject lines matches the solicitation exactly, including amendment numbers. Contracting offices sort incoming mail by this number, and a mismatch is one reason a question goes unanswered.
What it is not: the contract number. After award the contract gets its own number, and the task or delivery orders under it get another layer again.
