FPDS and USAspending
Also called: FPDS, Federal Procurement Data System, FPDS-NG, USAspending, USAspending.gov, award data, contract data reports
The Federal Procurement Data System is the government's database of record for federal contract actions, and USAspending.gov is the public site that presents that award data, with grants and other spending, in searchable form with downloads.
Reporting to FPDS is required by FAR 4.6 for most contract actions above the micro-purchase threshold, and USAspending.gov publishes the same data under the DATA Act and the Federal Funding Accountability and Transparency Act. FPDS reports now run through SAM.gov's data bank, while USAspending offers the friendlier search: filter by agency, NAICS, PSC, place of performance, set-aside and awardee, then download. Each award record shows the contracting office, the vehicle it was placed under, the obligated amount, the dates and the awardee's UEI.
What to check: who buys your service and through which vehicle, who the incumbents are and when their contracts end, how buys in your category are typically set aside, and the typical size of an award. The data lags by weeks and has errors, so verify a target on SAM.gov before acting.
What it is not: a list of open bids. FPDS and USAspending record what was already awarded; opportunities are on SAM.gov.
