Hi everyone, I'm Keisha W. from Atlanta. My firm is in the SBA Mentor-Protege Program now, and I'm looking at taking on a second mentor. We're an 8(a) firm doing staffing and training, mostly federal contracts. I've heard conflicting things about how many mentor-protege agreements a protege can have at one time, and the total number allowed over the program term.

I also want to confirm the maximum duration for these agreements. My current agreement has a specific end date, and I need to plan for the future. What are the rules for a protege having multiple mentor-protege agreements, and what is the maximum duration for each agreement, including extensions?

A protege generally may have a total of two mentor-protege agreements with different mentors over its life, and a mentor generally cannot have more than three proteges at one time. The term of an SBA mentor-protege agreement may not exceed six years, including any extension. These rules are part of the SBA's regulations for the SBA Mentor-Protege Program.

For federal contracts, these agreements are governed by 13 CFR 125.9, which outlines the eligibility and operational requirements. State and local procurements would follow their specific state procurement codes and any vendor guides on their respective procurement portals. It's important to keep track of your program term as an 8(a) firm, which is nine years, with the first four years as the developmental stage and the last five as the transitional stage.
