I'm trying to pick a C3PAO for a CMMC Level 2 certification assessment. I have a shortlist of three from the CMMC marketplace, and their approaches and lead times are really different. We do IT services, NAICS 541519, for federal agencies. The contracting officer on our recompete said we need to be compliant by November 10, 2026, which is when the next phase of CMMC implementation was supposed to start. One C3PAO offered a fixed price but wants to do a pre-assessment that costs almost as much as the actual assessment. Another one gave a low price, but the assessor on the call didn't seem to know much about our industry. The third one has a six-month backlog. What should I ask them about their experience with IT services firms, how they handle a failed practice, and their retest terms? Does the marketplace listing say anything about their quality or just their certification status?

You should ask a C3PAO about their experience with your specific NAICS code, their process for managing failed practices during an assessment, and their retest terms before signing a contract. The CMMC marketplace listing indicates a C3PAO's certification status and that they are authorized to conduct assessments, but it does not evaluate their quality or specific industry expertise. For your IT services firm (NAICS 541519), finding a C3PAO with experience in that sector can make the assessment smoother because they will understand the specific control implementations relevant to your work. Ask them how they handle an identified deficiency: what is the timeframe for corrective action, and what are the costs associated with re-evaluation? Clarify their retest terms, including whether they charge for each retest or a bundled fee for a certain number of attempts. Since CMMC Level 2 requires either a self-assessment or a certification assessment by a C3PAO, understanding these aspects is crucial for planning and budgeting. The contracting officer's date of November 10, 2026, refers to the initial date for Phase II of CMMC implementation, but the Department suspended Phase II. All Phase 1 self-assessment requirements remain in place.
