My company has eight technicians, and we're looking to bid on pest control service contracts for federal base housing and other federal buildings. I'm trying to figure out the right NAICS code to use. I see solicitations that list 561710, Exterminating and Pest Control Services, and sometimes 561720, Janitorial Services, or even 115112, Soil Preparation, Planting, and Cultivating. They all have different size standards.

Which NAICS code usually applies to federal pest control contracts? Does the choice of NAICS code change which set-asides we can bid on? We are a small business, and I want to make sure we are looking at the right opportunities.

The appropriate NAICS code for federal pest control services is usually 561710, Exterminating and Pest Control Services. The contracting officer assigns a single NAICS code that best describes the principal purpose of the product or service being acquired, as stated in FAR 19.102. This code then determines the applicable size standard for the solicitation. For example, NAICS 561710 has an employee-based size standard, while other codes like 561720 (Janitorial Services) typically have a receipts-based size standard. Your company's size, based on its average number of employees over the preceding 24 months, will determine if you qualify as a small business under the specific NAICS code assigned to the contract (13 CFR 121.106(b)). This qualification is crucial for bidding on small business set-aside opportunities. If a solicitation uses a different NAICS code that you believe is incorrect, you can raise this with the contracting officer during the Q&A period for clarification.
